"I'd love to sing on these tracks" beamed the Australian-born Jodi B. when she heard a tape by multi-instrumentalist Claus Buehler aka Color-Head in May 1996. A few days later, Claus, in turn, shivered when Jodi's incomparable voice merged with the previously "voiceless" tracks in a fascinating way during her first studio session.

This very motivating experience was logically followed by further sessions, and already in July '96 the first demo tape ("move slow!") was distributed in Berlin's underground.

Thus the DJ, "the smiling shaman", known for his omnipresent ears and great joy of experimentation, became one of the first TOBE fans. Especially the triphop-track "the gentle art of getting mad" was his favorite. Consequently, in August '96 on a full moon night, a "shamanic remix ritual" took place in Claus' studio.

The following dancefloor tests in the "Delicious Doughnuts" club were more than positive. So "the gentle art of getting mad" could place itself on the 2nd Doughnuts-Compilation (Jazzanova-Records).
In November '97 TOBE was invited by the "Doughnuts-Clan" to present the repertoire live for the first time at the compilation release party at the sold out "Döner" (doughtnuts nickname of the closest circle).


This very successful live debut in turn prompted DJ "Matt" of KISS FM ("Berlin's best blackmusic-radio") to bring TOBE together with the smiling shaman in a 2-hour special "on-air".

The day after several "TOBE-infected" radio listeners stood on the mat at WOM, to learn disappointedly that TOBE did not have a deal yet, so there were no CDs in the shops. At the same time, several "very interested" labels were of the opinion that the CD would be great ("We LOVE your music!") - but the songs had to be made more "suitable for the charts", because otherwise "at most 5000 CDs could be sold". So TOBE brought their CDs to the people by self-distribution.

Im November ´97 wurde TOBE vom „Doughnuts-Clan“ eingeladen, das Repertoir auf der Compilation-Release-Party im ausverkauften "Döner“ (doughtnuts Spitzname des engsten Kreises) erstmals live vorzustellen.

Dieses sehr erfolgreiche Live-Debüt wiederum veranlaßte DJ „Matt“ von KISS FM („Berlin´s best blackmusic-radio“) dazu, TOBE, zusammen mit dem lächelnden Schamanen in einem 2-Stunden-Special „on-air“ zubringen.

Tagsdrauf standen mehrere „TOBE-infizierte“ Radio-Hörer bei WOM auf der Matte, um enttäuscht zuerfahren, daß TOBE noch keinen Deal haben, es also auch noch keine CDs im Handel geben konnte. Zeitgleich waren mehrere „sehr interessierte“ Labels der Meinung, die CD wäre zwar super, („Wir LIEBEN Eure Musik!“) - die Songs müßten jedoch „chartstauglicher“ gemacht werden, da man sonst „höchstens 5000 CDs absetzen könnte“. So brachten TOBE bis heute ihre CDs per Eigenvertrieb unters Volk.
